Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary

 http://oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/
A great dictionary available online and in book form!
I have a copy with the CD.
I recommend that whatever English learning books you buy, if there is the option, buy the one with the CD.  The difference in price is usually small and being able to access this quality dictionary, with pronunciation and phonetic symbols, when not online, is a great advantage.

Have a look at The Oxford 3000™ word list.
This is taken from the online version:
The keywords of the Oxford 3000™ have been carefully selected by a group of language experts and experienced teachers as the words which should receive priority in vocabulary study because of their importance and usefulness.
Understand meanings—entries are written using only the Oxford 3000 key words
These 3000 words are listed alphabetically WITH their pronunciation!
